The 2018 Southern Africa Training of Trainers Session was organized by the IYCS Africa Coordination in collaboration with Zimbabwe YCS held in Harare, from 3rd – 8th April 2018. The Training Session was conducted on the theme:
‘Promoting Peaceful and Inclusive Societies for Sustainable Development: Students in Africa Taking Action ’.
A total of 30 YCS Leaders, Chaplains and Animators from Lesotho, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe participated in this training session.
The Objectives of the session were:
- To empower YCS Leaders, Chaplains and Animators from various National Movements in the region to take leadership action towards promoting peaceful and inclusive societies.
- To better understand leadership and specific roles of youth in promoting sustainable development in their communities,
- To promote better understanding of Democratic Citizenship from global perspective,
- To strengthen and improve YCS Leadership and Structure in the region.

The training session was a great opportunity to IYCS Africa Coordination Team to share with the national leaders the involvement of the movement in promoting Sustainable Development in the society through advocating for peace, justice, and inclusion among others.
The training focused on building capacity of the national leaders on several topics relating to their society such as; students’ reality in the world today and the challenges to leadership; Relevance of the Catholic Social Doctrine for Leadership today; YCS Leadership, YCS Structure & Team Work; Roles of young people in promoting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); Community Action (Work of Charity); Exposure Visits/ dialogue with various stakeholders and selected local authorities at Zimbabwe National Parliament. As outcome of the session, participants were able to better understand the meaning of Democracy and its derivatives like peace, justice, effective, accountable, inclusive institutions, and sustainable development.
