IYCS Africa carried out a field visit to YCS Burundi from 3rd to 13th February 2017. The objective was to meet the various stakeholders of the YCS Movement in Burundi, and to find out the current state of activities and affairs of the Movement in the country. IYCS Africa met with the members of the national team as well as the delegates of the various dioceses, in the coordinating house of the Catholic Action Movements (CAM) in Bujumbura.
IYCS Africa also met with church leaders notably the Archbishop of Gitega, Rt. Rev. Simon Ntamwana, the Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Bujumbura, Monsignor Anatole Ruberinyange, and the Secretary-General of the Episcopal Commission for Lay Apostolate (ECLA) Fr. Salvatore Niciteretse, and the Chaplain of Catholic Action Movements Rev. Fr. Elie Sakubu. IYCS Africa also carried out a sensitization about the movement and its activities and campaigns through a radio broadcast at Radio Maria Burundi “get up and walk” talk show.
The visit was very rich in experience and learning on the life of the movement at the grassroots. We realized there is great potential untapped at the grassroots and support from former members and the church as a whole which gives us a very promising future and a great opportunity to inspire more young people to join us in the journey. However we noted the female students are not actively involved in leadership of the movement where we intend to focus more attention on in our future engagement with YCS Burundi.
